AUA's campus is in Coolidge, beside VC Bird airport. Here's what students and staff should know when renting nearby.

Where to live

  • Which areas are closest to campus?

Coolidge and the Jabberwock area are closest, with Hodges Bay, Crosbies, Cedar Grove and Marble Hill a short drive further.

  • Is it noisy near the airport?

Coolidge sits beside the airport. If you're a light sleeper, ask how close a home is to the flight path.

  • What security should I look for?

Look for burglar bars, good locks, outside lights, and whether the home is gated.

Your lease

  • How long should my lease be?

AUA starts new students in January, May and September, and most leave for clinical rotations after the basic sciences. Ask for a lease that ends when you leave, rather than a fixed year.

  • Can I share a home with classmates?

Sharing a 2 or 3 bed home is common. Agree whose name is on the lease and how rent, deposit and bills are split before you move in.

Your study set-up

  • Will my room have a desk and AC?

You'll spend long hours studying. Check the bedroom has a desk, good light and its own air conditioning.

  • Can I get fibre internet?

Lectures, question banks and video calls need a steady connection. Ask for the provider and speed; fibre is generally fastest.

  • Do power cuts happen?

Ask whether the home has a generator or battery backup to keep the lights, AC and Wi-Fi on.

Getting to class

  • Do I need a car?

Homes are not generally within walking distance of campus, and buses don't run to a timetable. Many students buy a used car and sell it on when they leave. We can recommend car rentals or used car sellers.
