Moving to Antigua for med school: a checklist

Published 24 October 2026 · Last verified 24 October 2026

Medical students come to Antigua from all over. Here's a practical checklist to work through before you fly, and in your first weeks.

Housing

  • Why can't I find more rentals online?

A lot of rentals in Antigua are let by word of mouth and never appear on the big rental sites or Facebook groups. Tell us what you need before you fly in and we'll ask around.

  • When should I sort out housing?

Furnished off-campus apartments are common. Look at homes on video, get the terms in writing, and don't send money before you have seen the place.

  • Which area suits my campus?

See our guides for student housing near AUA, near UHSA and near UWI Five Islands.

What to bring

  • What should I pack?

Most homes come furnished. Bring clothes for hot weather, a rain jacket, any prescription medication with a doctor's letter, and your study gear. Ask your landlord what bedding, kitchen items and fans are provided.

  • Can I ship things to Antigua?

Customs rules for shipped goods change. Ask your university and a shipping company before you send boxes.

Phone and money

  • How do I get a phone and SIM?

Check that your phone is unlocked before you leave, then buy a local SIM on arrival. WhatsApp is how most people in Antigua stay in touch.

  • How do I pay rent from abroad?

Venmo, Zelle and Cash App aren't available here. Many landlords take a local bank transfer or cash, and some take an international wire. Ask how your landlord wants to be paid before you arrive.

Day to day

  • How do I get around?

Most students get a car. Buses are minibuses that mostly run to and from St John's with no fixed timetable.

  • Where do I buy groceries?

Ask your landlord where the nearest shops are, and how far the nearest supermarket is, before you choose a home. Without a car, the distance matters.

  • Who pays for power, water and internet?

Electricity and water are often billed separately by APUA, and air conditioning adds up. Ask about water storage, and the internet provider and speed. Power cuts happen, so a battery backup helps.

  • What about hurricane season?

It runs from June to November. Ask whether the home has hurricane shutters, and think about insurance for your belongings.
