Renting in Antigua: what to expect

Published 24 October 2026 · Last verified 24 October 2026

Renting in Antigua works a little differently from the US, the UK or Canada. Here's what to know before you sign.

Money

  • Is rent in US$ or EC$?

Rent is quoted in US$ or EC$. The EC dollar is fixed at about EC$2.70 to US$1, so check which one a price is in.

  • What do I pay up front?

Many landlords ask for the first month's rent plus a security deposit before you move in, then rent monthly, in advance.

  • Can I pay rent with Venmo or Zelle?

Most landlords take a local bank transfer, cash or a cheque. Venmo, Zelle and Cash App aren't available here, and many landlords don't take credit cards or PayPal. From abroad, an international wire works but can take a few days, and both banks may charge fees.

  • Are bills included in the rent?

Electricity and water are usually paid separately to APUA, the public utility. Power costs more than in many countries, so air conditioning adds up.

Before you sign

  • Why can't I find more rentals online?

A lot of rentals in Antigua are let by word of mouth and never appear on the big rental sites or Facebook groups. Tell us what you need and we'll ask around.

  • Should I get it in writing?

Some lets are agreed on a handshake. Put the rent, deposit, length of stay, what's included and how the deposit comes back in writing. We can help you get that sorted.

  • Are any spaces shared?

Some homes share a yard, pool, laundry, parking or entrance with the landlord or other tenants. Ask what's shared and with whom.

  • Are homes furnished?

Many homes come furnished or part-furnished. Check what's included.

The home

  • Is there water storage?

Antigua has dry spells. Many homes have a cistern or tank to keep the taps running, so ask whether yours does.

  • How fast is the internet?

Speeds vary widely across the island. Ask for typical speeds or the provider; fibre is generally fastest.

  • What about hurricane season?

It runs from June to November. Ask whether the home has hurricane shutters, and think about insurance for your belongings.

Getting around

  • Do I need a car?

Most people get around by car. Buses are cheap minibuses that mostly run to and from St John's with no fixed timetable, and things are not generally within walking distance. We're happy to recommend car rentals, or where to buy a used car.

  • How do I find the address?

Many roads have no house numbers. Get clear directions or a map pin before a viewing.

  • Do landlords use WhatsApp?

Viewings and questions are usually sorted over WhatsApp, not email.
